About

Janus is an e-journal issued by the English Department, National Dong Hwa University, Hualien, Taiwan. It publishes selected papers, translations, and cultural observations produced by students. The aim of this journal is to allow for students to receive public recognition for their commitment to and enthusiasm for their subjects, promoting a wider exposure of their works.
The title of this e-journal, Janus, derives from ancient Roman mythology. Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions and hence of doors, passages, gates, bridges, and time. He is usually depicted as having two faces, with one looks forward to the future and the other turns toward the past. Given the fact that Janus forms a linkage between the past and the future, it embodies a non-dualistic mode of thought. Inspired by this dual-faced god of liminality, this journal hopes to open up a horizon of possibilities that insists on the mutual implication of the past and the future, the Self and its Other. Therefore, Janus suggests that creativity is an ongoing process and is implicated in a fluid, non-dualistic way of knowing and being.
